First, I brainstormed to decide on a theme and ultimately chose to capture the atmosphere of Hong Kong. The city’s neon lights immediately came to mind as an iconic element, so I decided to make them the focal point of this piece. I purchased neon light strips and grid netting, then carefully secured the lights onto the grid with nylon ties, shaping them into the desired forms. I hung each piece from the ceiling, creating an intricate, intersecting display reminiscent of Hong Kong’s vibrant streets.

Next, I recorded the lights illuminating one by one and edited the footage in Final Cut Pro. I added ambient sounds of dining in a restaurant, traffic signals, people’s voices, and Cantonese music, aiming to recreate the immersive sensation of standing on a Hong Kong street.
